BUT, there is a lot more to it than that! All glass has a COE or 'coefficient of expansion' and this determines the rate at which the glass expands and contracts with the heating and cooling. For the finished piece to be stable, all glass used needs to have the same or similar COE and even then, testing of the different glass is carried out to ensure its compatibility. Usually there is more than one firing needed to make the finished piece, sometimes several!
The whole process from loading the kiln to being able to remove the glass is normally 24 hours, allowing the glass to cool very slowly and avoiding any stresses occurring. The last firing is called a 'slump' cycle and this is when the bowls take shape.
