Blueberry Glass - Blue glass gifts

Essentially fused glass is made by layering the glass in the kiln and firing.

BUT, there is a lot more to it than that!

All glass has a COE or 'coefficient of expansion' and this determines the rate at which the glass expands and contracts with the heating and cooling. For the finished piece to be stable, all glass used needs to have the same or similar COE and even then, testing of the different glass is carried out to ensure its compatibility. Usually there is more than one firing needed to make the finished piece, sometimes several!

The whole process from loading the kiln to being able to remove the glass is normally 24 hours, allowing the glass to cool very slowly and avoiding any stresses occurring. The last firing is called a 'slump' cycle and this is when the bowls take shape. The flat piece is placed over a mould and during a shorter firing, will 'slump' into its final shape - and there it is, a quick guide to fused glass!

At Blueberry Glass we use the best quality compatible glass ensuring that all our products are stable and free of stresses. No further treatment or polishing takes place after the firing - they emerge from the kiln as glossy and smooth as you see them here. The tiny bubbles that appear in the glass are an inherent part of the fusing process and do not affect the quality of each piece. We recommend, as with all fine glass, to wash these items in warm soapy water and not in a dishwasher.

Every piece of Blueberry Glass is authenticated by a small label on the reverse and gift boxed with an aftercare card, assuring you that each and every item has been made here at the studio in Somerset . Sorry, but the studio is not open to visitors, but if you should have any questions or would like some further information please contact us.
